By CLEVER ZULU –
THE contract to construct an access road to the construction site of the six million litre Mongu fuel storage depot has been signed, Mines, Energy and Water Development Deputy Minister Charles Zulu has disclosed.
The K40 million contract was signed on Thursday last week between Government and China Geo construction company who are also working on the Mongu urban roads.
Mr Zulu said the contractor will start working on the four kilometre stretch as soon as possible.
The deputy minister said he was worried with the slow progress on the US$27 million project.
“Nothing much is happening at this site. It has been like this since I last visited this place in 2012 but I understand the contractors’ problems,” he said.
Mr Zulu was, however, optimistic that BelGravia services limited, the company contracted to work on the storage tanks, will deliver the work on time once the road is done.
Mr Zulu was speaking when he visited the construction site in Mongu at the weekend.
The construction of the fuel storage depot has been moving at a slow pace because of the poor road leading to the site, said site manager Joseph Wekesa.
Mr Wekesa also cited lack of electricity in the area as another source of slow works on the project.
“We applied to Zesco for electricity but we have not heard from them,” he said.
