THE Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has commissioned the Nanjucha grid extension in Nalolo District in Western Province that has electrified five rural schools and a health centre.
The eight million-project involved the construction of a 34.3 kilometres of 11KV overhead line from the existing 11KV line at Muoyo junction to Nanjucha Primary School.
The project has benefited Nanjucha Primary School, Nanjucha Rural Health Centre, Likuma, Litoya, Sianda, Lubosi and Liangati primary schools while local households and businesses have also been electrified under the project.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held at Lubosi Primary School on this week, Mines, Energy and Water Development Deputy Minister Charles Zulu said government does not want to see other people live in darkness while others had electricity.
“All Zambians must enjoy electricity whether in rural areas or urban areas,” he said.
Mr Zulu said the rural electrification drive remains one of the priority requirements to achieving economic growth and reducing poverty in the rural areas of Zambia.
“Through the available technologies such as solar home systems, solar mini grids, mini hydro power stations and indeed, grid extension projects, REA will continue to electrify rural areas in Zambia so that more citizens can have access to electricity and better quality of life,” he said.
Nalolo Member of Parliament Inonge Wina said the commissioning of the extension grid was a milestone in the development of the newly created Nalolo District.
