INTERNATIONAL Master (IM) Stanley Chumfwa suffered a shock defeat to fourth seed Justine Daka in the opening round of the Liyoca Open Chess tournament that got underway yesterday at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.

But his brother Kelvin, who won the Zimbabwean Open on January 2, got off to a flying start beating Arnold Siuluta from Mirconix Club.

Stanley, who is the tournament seed three, found the going tough against Daka of Nkwazi, who finished last year’s chess trial’s held in December in second place behind eventual winner Kelvin. Other games saw Gillian Bwalya, who is also an IM but rated first seed, beating Oscar Mwenya as FIDE Master (FM) Richmond Phiri secured a point after beating sixth seed Linus Katebe from Indo Zambia Bank.

Meanwhile, Chess Federation Zambia (CFZ) tournament director Aaron Banda said the Liyoca Open Chess tournament was been held in conjunction with Lusaka Province Chess Association and has attracted 53 participants.
