THIS week I would like to share with you our dear readers a letter wrote by one of Zambia’s top artiste, Mukubesa Mundia alias Petersen Zagaze.
The letter was posted on his numerous Facebook pages bantering journalists especially those that write entertainment news and entertainment columns lamenting that scribes want to reap where they did not sow.
He further goes on to complain that these professionals are working to bring the entertainment industry down because of their negative writing on several issues in the industry while complaining that their pay is low.
The Munyaule singer said that journalists who don’t write good about the entertainment don’t deserve high salaries.
Here is the letter below without any editing.
To All Zambian: Radio Presenters, Newspaper Editors, TV Personalities, Reporters, and Journalists in General.
If you are an Entertainment Journalist and you complain that your job doesn’t pay well in Zambia. I look at you and say it’s all your fault.
YOU WANT TO HARVEST
WHERE YOU DID NOT FARM.
It’s funny how you spend the rest of your career shooting down and being negative about the only thing that should be your major source of income and expect yourself to be valued well…. SMH
While your fellows are making it big in other countries, creating their entertainment industry and researching on how to make showbiz a big business that will earn themselves good money and a respectable life, you are busy writing, talking and being all negative about people involved in making music, movies, stand up comedians and artistes in general via Newspapers, Radio and Television.
So when your aim is to kill the artiste and make the industry irrelevant, how do you expect your pockets to have value? And how do you expect the consumer (Public) to take you who is concerned about rubbish things to be something worthy of recognition or a good pay.
Make whatever concerns your work a big deal and your benefits and earnings will be big too. Please if you need a wake up call and eye opening observation, Google on WILLY TUVA of Mambo Mseto (Kenya) or the mighty Sporah. These are some of your kind that have made it big out of making Showbiz and Entertainers a big deal in their respectable regions (EAST AFRICA).
Change your attitude and experience change in bank account. AS FOR US (Entertainers), WE ARE GRAFTING ON MAKING OUR INDUSTRY BIG EVERYDAY,
No Matter how much you pull down. Petersen Zagaze C.E.O ZagaLyfe PREP Incorporation.
When the above letter was posted on Facebook almost all comments that came fourth was praising the singer for the banter though one Isaac
Mulinda Junior responded in the negative; “Learn to take Criticism light, at the end of it all you learn something, am one of the few radio presenters that would come out and say that’s a good or pathetic song regardless of who did it, a lot needs to be done if we are compete with guys from the west musically. If anyone wants me to explain more what I mean please do let me know.”
Chishaba Masengu added, “We seem to have slightly disgraced from Zagaman’s concern. First of all, I agree with young Mulinda. We as entertainment journalist are not in the business to pumper artistes.
Artistes need critics for them to grow. Like they say spare the rod, You spoil the child’. Even a malicious critique will teach you something. Having said that, am proud that I squeezed in a music report on ‘New Age’ on the ZNBC main news when music was regarded as a waste of time in the early nineties.”
Petersen has his own concerns and might have a point though he needed to be clearer on what the journalists have been doing to bring down the entertainment industry.
I guess when one makes a career choice in life, they are very much aware of what their jobs pay. For those journalists that have been complaining to Petersen about their wages I pity you and my advice is that you quit and find something to do.
I took time to read widely about Willy Tuva, who happens to be a TV and Radio personality in Kenya. The man is just one of those people that have made it through hosting popular TV and Radio programmes. Of course nothing special about Tuva, because people like Innocent Kalaluka has equally achieved that feat which is nothing extra ordinary.
I invite contributions from my fellow scribes and those artists that think journalists are doing nothing or something to promote the entertainment industry. I will respond Mr Mukubesa Mundia next week on this same platform.
