MORE than 60 budding players will today compete for honours in the Zambia Table Tennis Association (ZTTA) National Junior Championship at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.
ZTTA patron Haroon Ghumra said the tournament would see 10 players coming from the new clubs, Munali and Yofoso taking part.
“In the last tournament, we were expecting about 60 participants but the number shot up to 85.This shows that there is growing interest in the sport by many young people. I am glad that the new clubs Munali and Yofoso will be competing,’ he said.
He said ZTTA was hosting the junior events with the aim of targeting the grassroots level which was the basement for the growth of table tennis in Zambia.
He said the upcoming players would compete in categories which include boys under-eight, 12, 14, 18 and girls under-10 and 18.
The tournament is being sponsored by Best Juice, Chama Trophies and Ghumra.
Under-18 defending champion Simon Mwando, who made a came back last weekend, faces a tough challenge of proving consistence in today’s tournament while Latifah Nalavwe aims to clinch the under-18 girls’ title.
