From CHISHIMBA CHISHIMBA, New York, USA –
THE United Nations (UN) has called on Governments across the globe to pool resources towards the fight against the negative effects of climate change which threaten opportunities for people.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said here that climate change threatens peace, prosperity and opportunities for billions of people.
Mr Ban was speaking at the opening of 2014 Climate Summit at the UN headquarters, which preceded the General Assembly, under the theme, ‘catalysing action’.
Climate change is a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.
He said because of climate change, dreams of people throughout the world hang in the balance.
“Climate change threatens hard-won peace, prosperity and opportunities for billions of people. Today, we must set the world on a new course. Climate change is the defining issue of our age,” he said.
The Secretary General said the human, environmental and financial cost of climate change is fast becoming unbearable for the whole world.
“We have never faced such a challenge. Nor have we encountered such great opportunity. A low carbon, climate resilient future will be a better future,” he said.
World leaders have gathered here for the UN General Assembly, which has been preceded by the 2014 climate summit.
