By SARAH TEMBO –

GOVERNMENT has attributed the increased number of Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases reported recently to irresponsible consumption of alcohol and drug abuse.

Gender and Child Development Minister  Inonge Wina said in a statement yesterday that the increased number of GBV reported cases was alarming hence the need for all stakeholders to come on boardand fight the vice.

Ms Wina said the increased number of gender GBV cases indicated a breakdown of the family system thereby eroding the values of cultural and tradition as well as the good image of the country.

“What is also becoming clear is that, irresponsible consumption of alcohol and substance abuse are one of the major contributing factors to some of the incidences that have been recorded. Therefore, I call upon all stakeholders to come together at family and community level to address alcoholism and other immoralities in our society,” she said.

Ms wina said Government would not relent in ensuring that society was set free from such negative vices.

She urged families to take stock of how they were building family values because that was the starting point to creating a society that was driven by values enshrined in the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation.
