THE 48 Ethiopians intercepted in a containerised truck in Kapiri Mposhi on Saturday have been transferred to Mukobeko Maximum Prison.
Immigration Department public relations officer Nshinka Namati said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the Ethiopians had been transferred to Kabwe and were currently detained at Mukobeko.
Mr Namati said: ‘‘They are currently detained at Mukobeko where statements are being recorded from them.’’?He said the driver of the truck, Erasto Mbilinyi, 46, a Tanzanian was also scheduled to be moved from Kapiri Mposhi to Kabwe yesterday.
Mr Namati said none of the Ethiopians had any immigration documentation.?He said the Ethiopians were screened for any medical issues before being taken to the prison.
‘‘As a requirement, all of them underwent medical examinations before being admitted into Mukobeko,’’ he said.
The 48 Ethiopians were apprehended by the Immigration and Police officers in Kapiri Mposhi for unlawful entry.
They were travelling in a Tanzanian containerised Scania-BDI Truck registration number T606 and were apprehended along the stretch between Mkushi and Kapiri Mposhi by a combined team of Immigration and Police officers.
