THE Luanshya Municipal Council has begun the process of installing solar street lights in the district at a cost of about K1, 500.
Council public relations manager Gideon Thole said in an interview yesterday that the council has set a budget of K1,083.410 and Government has supplemented the programme with a grant of K500, 000.
Mr Thole said the council had already installed street lights in part of the town centre, the second class area and was working in Lumumba Road.
The project would be extended to Mpatamato, Roan and other areas.
“Other roads to benefit from the project include streets in Ward 18, Roan Township, streets in Mpatamato section 24 and Hibiscus Road among many others,” Mr Thole said.
Meanwhile, the council would start closing up all buildings in the trading and industrial area that are kept dirty and not well painted in the district.
Mr Thole said this also applied to some houses that are out of shape and not renovated.
He said it was the role of the council to ensure that a clean environment was maintained.
