ZEMA issues ultimatum against Varun Beverages

THE Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has given Varun Food and Beverages Zambia Limited up to October 6, this year to comply with the environmental regulations failure to which its operating licence will be revoked.
The ZEMA issued a compliance order to Varun Food and Beverages for alleged non-compliance of the Environmental Management Act (EMA) number 12 of 2011.
ZEMA principal Information and Communication officer Irene Lungu-Chipili said the agency had on September 4, this year issued a compliance order to Varun Food and Beverages and set October 6, as the deadline to comply.
Ms Chipili said the company had been ordered to put in place adequate measures to ensure management of effluent discharged from its operations in a manner that did not constitute a risk to human health and did not cause adverse effect.
“ZEMA has issued a Compliance Order to Varun Food and Beverages Zambia Limited for non-compliance to the provisions of the Environmental Management Act (EMA) No.12 of 2011 and failure to comply will lead to their licence being revoked by the stipulated time,” she said.
She said all licensed facilities were required to adhere to conditions stipulated by environmental law and other relevant laws and uphold environmentally friendly practices.
Varun Food and Beverages Zambia Limited hold a franchise for Pepsi Cola, Mirinda and 7Up soft drinks in the country.
