THE Body of a 30-year-old woman who was mauled by a crocodile in Kitwe’s Chipata Township has been retrieved from the Kafue River.
Anna Chabu of CP17-78 Chipata Township was attacked by a crocodile two weeks ago after rescuing her brother from the jaws of the reptile.
Ms Chabu had pulled her brother who was fishing on the Kafue River, which is located less than 100 metres from their house from the jaws of the crocodile which had attacked him by the ankle.
The reptile, however, turned on Ms Chabu, grabbing her by the waist and threw her into the river.
Her former husband Thomas Kazebausha said yesterday that the body was discovered on Friday morning with the deceased’s left hand and foot completely mauled.
Mr Kazebausha explained that the body was seen floating on the river after an evangelist from the New Apostolic Church conducted prayers at the banks of the river on Friday.
He said the rescue team which was hired by the family gave up on searching for the body until the man of God conducted prayers and informed them that the body would be found.
“After the evangelist conducted prayers and informed us that the body would been found, the same day, some boys called us that they had seen Bana Gift’s (Ms Chabu) body floating on the river,” he said.
Mr Kazebausha said the body was seen 50 metres away from where the incident took place.
He said Ms Chabu has since been buried.
Mr Kazebausha called on relevant authorities to ensure the protection of residents living on the banks of the Kafue River because a lot of lives have been lost in a similar manner.
