TWO people have died of suspected cholera in Lukanga swamps of Central Province.
Kapiri Mposhi District Commissioner Beatrice Sikazwe said three others were receiving treatment at a clinic in Lukanga.
Ms Sikazwe has since warned people in Lukanga and those in neighbouring areas against eating fish as a preventive measure.
She said it was saddening that the water-borne disease had claimed the lives of two people.
Of the two, one was brought in dead, while the other died at the clinic on Wednesday.
Ms Sikazwe , however, said health personnel were already on the ground and had set up camp in the swamp where they were distributing chlorine and undertaking sensitisation programmes in the area.
“I can confirm that two suspected cholera cases have been reported in Lukanga swamps but we are confident that the disease will not spread to other areas, but I want to ask the public to briefly stop eating fish, especially from the swamps as a preventive measure,” Ms Sikazwe said.
She was happy with the quick response by health personnel and asked members of the public to ensure that they boiled water before drinking it to prevent the epidemic.
