INSPECTOR General of Police Stella Libongani has advised police officers deployed in various polling stations ahead of the September 11, by-elections to be professional and alert in their conduct.
Ms Libongani said she was interested in seeing to it that elections were conducted in a peaceful manner and that police officers should ensure that this was achieved.
Speaking in Mkushi’s Masansa area on Thursday when she addressed police deployed there for the Mkushi South by-elections, Ms Libongani said police officers were expected to be professional and not be biased when handling cases that arose.
She said she expected the officers to execute their duties effectively and ensure that the electorate was protected from intimidation and other vices.
The police chief who was accompanied by Central Province police chief Standwell Lungu, said officers should ensure law breakers were arrested.
“I want to point out that you are expected to be professional in your conduct because that is the only way that people will be confident in you, as you attempt to ensure that law and order is upheld,” he said.
She further directed police officers to sensitise the public over their presence in the area and to make them understand that they were there to maintain peace and to protect citizens.
