FOUR people, among them a baby, have died while 18 others are in critical condition after the bus they were travelling in overturned on the Kalomo-Livingstone Road.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Mary Chikwanda said in an interview yesterday that the 18-seater minibus had 22 passengers on board who were travelling from Choma to Livingstone.
Ms Chikwanda said two unidentified male passengers and a baby died on the spot while another unidentified female died on the way to Livingstone General Hospital.
She said the accident happened around 10:30 hours on Wednesday, 15 kilometres from Kalomo town, involving a Toyota Hiace minibus with registration number AKB 310.
She said the bus driver, Clement Siamilandu, 32, of Kamuza Township in Choma, lost control of the motor vehicle after it experienced a rear tyre burst and overturned.
“I can confirm that we have a fatal accident which happened yesterday (Wednesday) involving a Toyota Hiace minibus in which three people died on the spot while one died on the way to the hospital,” she said.
Ms Chikwanda said the bodies which had not been identified were lying in the Kalomo General Hospital mortuary waiting for identification by the relatives.
She said the other 18 unidentified passengers sustained multiple body injuries and majority of them were in critical condition.
She said three passengers were admitted to Choma General Hospital four to Livingstone General Hospital, two to Zimba Mission Hospital and the rest Kalomo General Hospital.
Ms Chikwanda appealed to members of the public whose relatives had used a minibus from Choma to Livingstone to help police with identification process.
