STATE HOUSE has lashed out at Heritage Party (HP) leader Godfrey Miyanda for maliciously suggesting that Cabinet should be impeached for not resolving to constitute a medical board to examine President Michael Sata.
Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations, George Chellah said it was strange for Brigadier-General Miyanda or any other person to call for the impeachment of Cabinet for not constituting of the medical board to examine the President’s health.
Mr Chellah said that Gen Miyanda knew very well that there was no single clause in the Constitution that provided for the impeachment of the Cabinet.
“Article 36 (1) of the Constitution grants the Cabinet full discretion on whether to table the resolution or not and even when it is tabled it is not automatic that it will pass as the Constitution provides that a vote should be taken by the Cabinet,” Mr Chellah said.
He said that there was no reason to constitute a medical board because the Head of State was enjoying good health.
Mr Chellah said there was no crisis in the nation as President Sata was even chairing Cabinet meetings and executing his duties effectively. He advised Gen Miyanda to concentrate on more progressive matters rather than focusing on none issues.
“There is no reason to constitute a medical board because the Head of State is well and has been chairing Cabinet meetings and executing his duties effectively,” Mr Chellah said.
Mr Chellah further said that Gen Miyanda was also aware that matters concerning the setting up of the medical board to examine the President’s health were before court and, as such it was contemptuous and disrespectful of the courts for him to be commenting on them.
Mr Chellah was reacting to a statement in the Press by Gen Miyanda, who was calling for the impeachment of Cabinet for failing to perform its constitutional obligation of constituting the medical board to examine President Sata’s health status to continue holding on to the presidency.
