THE Government and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have invested about K600, 000 in the construction of 33 VIP pit latrines in Mporokoso District aimed at improving sanitation situation in the area.
PLADOC Enterprises site manager Kapembwa Kapembwa said his firm was engaged by the Government to construct about 33 VIP pit latrines in Mporokoso at a cost of K600, 000.
Speaking during a media tour organised by the National Savings and Credit Bank (Natsave) in Mporokoso, Mr Kapembwa said the project was expected to be completed by the end of the year, saying that the VIP pit latrines would help improve the sanitation in the area.
“We are constructing some of the pit latrines at schools and we are now just completing the works here at Chief Mumporokoso’s palace,” he said.
Mr Kapembwa commended the Government for investing in the pit latrines as this would help curb water-borne diseases resulting from poor hygiene.
And Chief Mumporokoso has thanked Government for bringing various developmental projects to his chiefdom.
The chief said the construction of the VIP pit latrine at his palace and within the district was a clear testimony of the Government’s commitment to the development of the country.
“I would like to thank the Government for putting up the VIP pit latrines in my chiefdom and we are happy that this will help improve on the issues of sanitation in the district,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mporokoso District Commissioner Jennifer Chongo has said the construction of the Kasama-Mporokoso road will be completed by the end of the year.
Ms Chongo said Sable Construction Company had managed to construct about 65 per cent of the road, which was 87 kilometres.
Speaking during a media tour of Mporokoso District, Ms Chongo said out of the 174kilometres, 87kilometres had already been done and that the project was expected to be completed by the end of the year.
She said the Kasama-Mporokoso road was important for the promotion of the Northern Tourism Circuit.
