THE Zambia Amateur Swimming Union (ZASU) has urged swimmer Ralph Goveia to step up his game ahead of future competitions.
Goveia, who was Zambia’s sole representative in swimming at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, exited the event after failing to reach the semi-finals of the 50m butterfly despite finishing second in his qualifying heat.
The Zambian swimmer also took part in the 100m butterfly event where he was also eliminated in the qualifying stage.
But ZASU Copperbelt region representative Sophie Shone, believes the swimmer put up a spirited fight despite falling out of contention during competition.
Speaking in an interview yesterday, Shone said as the 2014/2015 ZASU season opens with the opening gala set for the American International School
of Lusaka on September 20, swimmers should aspire to improve on last
year’s performance.
“This will be the first swimming gala in the swimming season that will serve as a warm up and will also encourage beginners to participate in swimming,” she said.
Shone said preparations for the swimming gala would start next week after schools in all the swimming schools from different towns opens.
She said the gala will attract swimmers from various clubs across the country.
