ORIENTAL Quarries Boxing Promotion (OQBP) has postponed the exhibition fight between World Boxing Council (WBC) silver bantamweight champion Catherine Phiri and Asaha Ndere from Tanzania that was set for Kasama due to lack of sponsorship.
OQBP manager Christopher Malunga said in an interview in Lusaka that the tournament that was set for August 30 has been moved to an unknown date due to the slow response of sponsors in Kasama.
Malunga said OQBP only managed to raise K15,000 out of its K56,000 budget for the exhibition fight aimed at helping Catherine’s WBC bantamweight title defence tile slated for November 22.
“So far the response from Kasama has not been good, we have only raised 15,000 from here in Lusaka but I am positive the tournament will be staged soon. We are appealing to business house in Kasama to come on board and help stage this tournament in their home town,” Malunga said.
He said OQBP cannot manage to host the tournament by itself but needed various companies to come in and help. Malunga said the stable was not only looking at staging the fight but also conduct talent identification programme (TIP) unlike only concentrating on tapping talent along the line of railway.
