EASTERN Water and Sewerage Company (EWSC) is losing 43 per cent of its treated water every month due to leakages and illegal connections.
Company managing director Wamuwi Changani told a stakeholders meeting held at New Crystal Springs in Chipata on Tuesday that the 43 per cent which was being lost in the water supply was above the accepted 24 per cent rate by the National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO).
Mr Changani said  the only remedy to addressing the challenges was a total overhaul of the water supply system, especially in Chipata District.
“Currently, the company is losing 43 per cent of water supply every month due to pipe leakages and illegal connections,” he said.
Speaking at the same meeting, Chipata District Commissioner Kalunga Zulu urged the company to improve its service delivery in the district.
Mr Zulu said the water company needed to improve in areas such as responding to customers’ complaints and reports of leaking sewer and water pipes.
He said his office had received complaints on how customers were being irregularly billed by the water company.
Mr Zulu said Government was aware of the challenges the water company was facing.
