THE Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has said Kabwe District records five to seven road traffic accidents every weekend.
RTSA senior road traffic inspector Misheck Lungu said the agency was saddened by the high number of road traffic accidents in the district.
Mr Lungu added that most of the accidents that were recorded were due to drunk driving and not abiding by the traffic rules.
“The district records about five road traffic accidents on weekends alone which are mainly as a result drunk drivers who lose control of their vehicles and hit into other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians,” Mr Lungu said.
Mr Lungu has since warned drivers to be cautious and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol as it was criminal.
He said the agency had come up with a number of programmes to mitigate the accidents, such as sensitisation in churches and markets.
Mr Lungu said the agency was also distributing the Highway Code to drivers found wanting and to the people trading along the highway.
He has since called on the general public to report to the agency any misconduct on the roads in order to help save lives.
“As an agency, we want to build a relationship with the public and, therefore, we are calling on the public and all well-meaning Zambians to help us by reporting drivers who are not following the  laid down road rules,” Mr Lungu said.
Mr Lungu said the agency will next month launch the fast-track court in the district to ensure that more cases of road traffic offences were tried within the shortest time possible.
