Zambia 2 Pakistan 9
ZAMBIA’S hopes of minting a medal in Hockey 5’s at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games were yesterday dashed after the boys’ team bowed out of
contention having recorded a third defeat.
The team needed to win their last Pool B game in order to brighten their chances of progressing to the next round, but that was not the case as a more determined Pakistan side ran rampage to inflict a painful defeat on the Zambians.
Zahid Maliki and Muhamad Atiq scored a hat trick apiece in the one sided encounter.
Maliki scored twice in the opening four minutes to put Pakistan in the driving seat but Zambia responded swiftly when Blessing Lowole and Alfred Mpande restored parity with goals in the fourth and seventh minutes.
Zambia’s equaliser did not seem to have recharged the players as Pakistan went on to score seven goals through Muhammad Kamal, Atiq, Mubasha Ali and Muhammad Mahmood to send the Zambians back home.
The girls’ team, who were eliminated on Tuesday, made it four losses out of the four games played, with a 5-2 defeat by the Germans in a formality match.
Zambia grabbed an early lead through Catherine Kalomo in the opening minute, only to concede five goals via Kyra Angerer, Luise Hohenhovel Anna Jeltsch and Alena Baumgarten.
Eniless Mambwe pulled one back before Theresa Scheidl sealed victory for Germans.
