NATIONAL paralympics coach Wisdom Monga has picked a final five member squad to represent the country at the 2014 Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA) Zone Six Games to be staged in Zimbabwe from the 5 to 14 December.
Monga said the athletes have been drawn from various clubs across the country and will compete in the visually impaired category.
He named the athletes as Celina Phiri, Monica Munga and Philemon Banda, all from the Chipata based Magwero School, and Christopher Manda of Matero who will compete in both the 100m and 200m.
Lauti Moonga, of Livingstone School of the Blind, will compete in the 800m and 1500m events.
Monga said the athletes were picked from the provisional 11 that were summoned for trials and expressed happiness that they were shaping up well.
“The team has been training at the Olympic Youth Development Centre and will go into camp in October in readiness for the upcoming games and I am delighted to state that they are shaping up well,” Monga said.
Monga, who had drafted 11 athletes in the provisional team that included four complete visually impaired athletes, said the five athletes picked in the national had been impressive during the trials.
During the 2012 Zone Six Games held in Lusaka, Zambia claimed gold medals through 100m runner Anna Kayange, who competed in the T12 category for the partial visually impaired and Penza Munkombwe in the 1500m T13 class.
