PROCEEDINGS at Nakonde magistrate’s court yesterday came to a standstill when a 44-year-old man attempted to commit suicide in the court room.
This happened as magistrate Joshua Sikazwe was passing judgment in a case where the accused, Kasonde Simwinga was charged with trafficking in cannabis.
Simwinga, a peasant farmer of Mukoma Village in Chieftainess Waitwika’s area tried to commit suicide by slicing his throat with a razor blade.
Simwinga was in court for judgment for trafficking in 3.2 grammes of cannabis.
Passing judgment, magistrate Sikazwe committed Simwinga to the High Court as he was a second offender, after serving a sentence last year for a similar offence.
It was after magistrate Sikazwe passed judgment that Simwinga, while in the accused box started slicing his throat in an attempt to take his own life.— ZANIS
