THIRTY TWO poles worth K80,000 belonging to Zesco went up in flames on Friday after unknown people set fire on them.
Luapula Province Commissioner of Police, Malcolm Mulenga said yesterday that 32 Zesco poles worth K80,000 meant for rural electrification burnt to ashes after they were set ablaze by unknown people.
Mr Mulenga said the incident happened around 16:20 hours.
He said the project manager and site engineer of Two Third Voltcom Company who was in charge of the poles reported the matter to police.
“The incidence happened at Chibwile Village in Chief Kambwali’s area in Kawambwa District around 16:20 hours. The police visited the site after the matter was reported and poles were found burning,” Mr Mulenga said.
He said no arrests had been made and the motive for burning the poles had not been established.
Police have launched investigations in the matter.
Meanwhile, Mr Mulenga said a 75-year-old man who went missing from home three weeks ago in Nalubamba Village in Mwansabombwe District was found burnt in the bush after the fire swept through the area where he was.
He said Muyembe Chipota’s remains were found on Saturday around 13:00 hours in the bush along Old Kawambwa Road.
Mr Mulenga said Mr Chipota’s relative Bonwel Chipota reported to police that the deceased was mentally disturbed at the time of his disappearance from home.
He said the family had since collected the remains of the deceased and buried them.
