Radio Review - jack1UNTO Copperbelt airwaves, a new radio station is born, it is currently running test transmission on 91.7 FM in Ndola loud and clear.
On air was a female voice who identified herself as Lady M last Monday late afternoon when she played some sentimental music, ideal for a day like that one which was a public holiday.
The following day (Tuesday Aug, 5) was another day of testing, testing transmission, except this time the male anchor played music continuously without identifying himself and the station.
It is a good practice even at testing level to intermittently identify both the radio station and presenter on air. In fact, what every broadcaster must not forget is reminding listeners of his or her name, time and station.
Something like; “You are listening to Radio Chimwemwe on 91.7 FM with me Lady M, time now is 11:45 hours.”
Such check-ups update fresh listeners who could be tuning in to the radio station and, in this age of proliferated radio also reminds others on what station they could be tuned to.
We, welcome Radio Chimwemwe with joy and look forward to doing business with this newly-born baby on Zambian airwaves. It makes the second station from Ndola after Sun FM.
SUN
It sounds strange to hear that “You are watching BBC”, whenever Sun FM news crosses over for international news items, when listeners are not watching but listening to the radio.
Maybe editing those international news items would be appropriate, or simply monitoring BBC radio instead of BBC Television as they do.
RCV
Radio Christian Voice (RCV) without doubt is like a church on air, the music, hymns and sermons aired creates a mood of worship to listeners.
There is however, need to spread out sermons rather than running them one after another. Edifying as sermons might be, listeners may not attentively follow through if they ran for one hour non-stop.
Monday evening runs ‘hour of blessings’ presented by Bishop Joe Imakando who is followed by Reverend Brian Bwalya from Northmead Assembly. Excellent preachers they are!
Good as the speakers are, they both bring out theological and spiritual aspect of the Word of God. Spreading out these sermons would help listeners break the monotony of non-stop Gospel.
ZNBC
Love and Marriage, a late night presentation of matters of the heart programme by Mable Knight on ZNBC’s Radio 2 has a new panelist who is a clergyman.
Some listeners phoned through this column stating that the previous panelists of Evangelist Shabula and Pastor Chihana handled questions well by mixing both Biblical and traditional aspects to the topics.
Much as listeners appreciate the current panelist, they feel his approach of strictly responding to questions from the Biblical point view does not adequately conclude matters, he leaves out the traditional view point.

Now that Brighton Matoka, who was presenter of Nsang’u Ya Mukayi, (World News) on ZNBC’s Lunda programme on Radio 1 has retired, ardent followers of that presentation are expectant.
Last week’s programme on Saturday August, 2 at 08:30 hours had a new presenter who some listeners feel need to research more in order to give a detailed presentation.
PHOENIX
MTN has for some time now been running an advert for Natasha’s debut album featuring Pompi and MAG44, inviting listeners to download it for a ringtone.
Concern, however, is that no one song has ever played on radio and that it would be tricky for anyone to go for music they have never heard before.  Wouldn’t be better for Phoenix to sample songs for listeners to have a feel and decide whether to buy.

Pansaka, an exciting live programme on Radio Phoenix brings intriguing topics discussed by concerned panelists.
Going by the many letters that have come through to this column, it appears listeners want the programme be given more time to run than the 30 minutes.
TIPS
One of the problems facing drama producers in countries where there is little theatre activity is finding actors for the radio. Since there is insuflicient work to ensure a professional actor a living, the drama producer must rely upon amateur talent, usually to be found among the various kinds of little theatre groups.
Producers should regularly attend play readings and performances organised by little theatre societies and university dramatic clubs, and invite those he selects to attend a studio audition.
