THE Zambia Boxing Federation (ZBF) says the coming 2014 AIBA Women’s Boxing World Championships billed for South Korea in November, will be a litmus test for the country’s female boxers.
ZBF chief Thomas Chileshe said yesterday that women boxing had recorded tremendous improvements over the last few years as could be seen by the international titles that female boxers have won.
Chileshe said time was ripe for the women pugilists to compete against top class boxers around the globe and that the ZBF would mobilise a strong team to compete at the World Championships.
The World Championships will be held at the Halla Gymnasium of Jeju City from November 13 and November 25 and will attract female pugilists from around the globe.
Meanwhile, Chileshe described the national tournament held during this year’s Agriculture and Commercial Show as a success.
Chileshe said the tournament culminated into the selection of a seven-member Under-20 national team that will represent the country at the Zone Six Games slated for Zimbabwe in December.
The provisional team includes light flyweight Alfred Muwowo Alfred from Oriental, flyweight Rabson Tembo of Green Buffaloes, bantamweight Peter Ngoma from Nkwazi and lightweight Emmanuel Ngoma of Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions.
Others are welterweight Ackson Zulu Ackson of Indeni and middleweight Raymond Kapata of Evergreen Boxing Club.
The ZBF technical committee is yet to name three female boxers in the flyweight, lightweight and middleweight categories ahead of the Games.
