ZAMBIAN athletes have been prodded to aim for gold when they take to their respective Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games events tonight.

First Secretary for Press at the Zambian High Commission in the United Kingdom, Amos Chanda said there was need for the remaining athletes to aim for nothing but gold.

Middleweight boxer Ben Muziyo tonight takes on Englishman Antony Fowler in the semi-finals while the men’s athletics team goes to the track in the 4x400m relay qualifying round.

Chanda said in an interview from London that the mission was pleased with the performance of the Zambian athletes.

He said the performance had improved as compared to the London 2012 Olympic Games where Zambia failed to win a medal.

“We want the remaining athletes still competing in the Games to win gold medals, their performance has improved from the time they competed in the Commonwealth Games and just want to encourage them to go far and aim for gold,” he said.

Zambia was competing in eight of the 17 disciplines at the Glasgow Games which come to an end here tomorrow but managed only a bronze through judoka Boas Munyonga.

Muziyo also won Zambia a second medal but the colour of the medal would be determined when he fights tonight.

Zambia took part in swimming, lawn bowling, table tennis, badminton, squash, judo, boxing and athletics.

Meanwhile, Chanda paid tribute to the Zambian contingent for giving Republican Vice-President Guy Scott a warm reception when he visited them at the Games Village.
