FORMER FOOTBALL Association of Zambia (FAZ) general secretary, Machacha Shepande has been appointed head of sport at African Union (AU) Commission effective today.
Shepande said he will use his experience in sports administration to provide necessary guidelines to AU.
Shepande said the appointment was exciting and that he felt his knowledge would benefit AU.
He said his role at AU would be to initiate and formulate sports policies and see how best they could contribute to development.
“I will try to support sport development and sport for development to member countries of the AU,” Shepande said.
He said sports should not only be used for competition and winning medals but also as a tool for development.
Shepande said Zambian sport could also develop if the nation came up with a long term systematic planning programmes.
“We should have long -term strategies on how to determine performance at high level tournaments such as the Commonwealth Games,” he said.
