THE Ndola City Council has so far killed 32 stray dogs in Chifubu Township during the ongoing dog registration and sensitisation exercise.
The local authority has also registered 350 dogs between July 22 and 27 this year in Chifubu Township.
Council public relations manager Roy Kuseka confirmed this yesterday saying 32 dogs were killed, while 350 were registered in the area during the ongoing registration and sensitisation exercise.
He said the exercise would soon be extended to Kawama Township in order to prevent the occurrence of rabies in the area.
He said the local authority was working on reducing the dog population in the city, which currently stood at 8000.
“We are working on reducing the occurrence of rabies by curbing the dog population in Ndola which stands at over 8 000. From this 8 000, only 2 300 dogs are registered with Ndola Council,” he said.
Last week, a six-year-old child from Kasongo area on the Kitwe – Ndola dual carriage way died of rabies at Arthur Davison Hospital following a dog bite.
A team comprising council and Veterinary Department officers visited Kasongo area to carryout vaccinations.
According to the Dog Control Act and Ndola by-laws, dog owners are supposed to confine pets within residential boundaries.
