From ELIAS CHIPEPO in Glasgow, Scotland –
BUDDING badminton star, Chongo Ngosa has been tossed out from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games here as the curtains are slowly being drawn for Zambia’s medals in badminton, squash and table tennis.
With the badminton duo of Ngosa and Chongo Mulenga eliminated from both the singles and doubles men’s events, expectations in claiming medals in table tennis were dealt with a big blow after the three envoys recorded mixed results in their opening singles’ matches.
The case is the same in the squash men’s and mixed doubles where inconsistency has seen the team struggling to record results.
In badminton, Ngosa started his campaign on a winning note, picking up a 2-0 win with set scores of 21-13, 21-13 over Daniel Penny Guernsey to reach round of 32 but lost 3-0 to Henry Gareth of Jamaica.
Ngosa lost 21-16, 21-14 to exit the competition.
Later he paired up with Mulenga, who was already eliminated from the singles, but the Zambian duo lost 2-1 to Sarim Mohammed and Zaki Hussein of Maldives with set scores of 24-22, 21-19, 19-21.
From the Scotsoun Camps, Mwinga Lengwe and Kelvin Ndhlovu teamed up in the men’s squash doubles and beat the pair of Jason Doyle and Jules Snagg of St. Vince & Grenad 2-0 with set scores of 11-3, 11-8 .
But Lengwe and Ndhlovu failed to maintain their momentum in their second Pool C as they lost 2-0 to the English pair of Selby Darly and Willstop James.
Lengwe and Ndhlovu were later scheduled to face the team of Brindle Anthony and Navas Christian of Gibraltar.
In the mixed doubles in Pool C, Manda Chilambwe and Sharon Chimfwembe lost 2-1 to the Northern Ireland duo of Perry Madeline and Michael Graig with set scores of 11-9, 6-11, 11-6.
Chilambwe and Chimfwembe were later set to play Grinham Racael and Palmer David of Australia before facing Marlene West and Stafford Cameroon of Cayman Islands.
The problems for Zambian table tennis players also continued as Simasiku Kalaluka lost 4-0 (11-6, 11-3, 11-2, 11-1) to Cyprus’ Marios Yiangou in game three of Group Four before suffering another defeat at the hands of Mahmub Billah of Bangladesh.
Kalaluka narrowly 4-3 to Billah with sets scores of 9-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-3, 11-8, 8-11, 11-3.
Noel Kasanda started his singles campaign in Group Eight with two crashing defeats to Philip Xiao of New Zealand and Uganda’s Kevin Mafabi of Uganda.
Against Xiao, Kasanda lost 4-0 with set scores of 11-3, 11-5, 11-1, 11-3 before suffering a 4-0 (15-13, 11-8, 11-3, 11-9) annihilation to Mafabi.
Friday Ng’andu lost to Malawian Stewart Hara 4-0 in his first Group 13 match with set scores of 4-11, 6-11, 4-11, 8-11.
Ng’andu managed to recover well and beat Stephen Jenkins of Wales 4-0 in his second match with sets of 11-7, 11-9, 11-2,11-5.
In the men’s doubles, Ng’andu teamed up with Kalaluka and last evening they were expected to face David Lol and Geoffrey Lol of Papua New Guinea.
