GOVERNMENT has said it has completed the slaughtering of pigs affected with the African Swine Fever (ASF) in the country.

Agriculture and Livestock Deputy Minister Luxon Kazabu said the farmers would be allowed to restock their farms in the next two weeks.

He said in an interview yesterday that the depopulation of the animals was successful and that the exercise was completed in December last year.

“We have completed the depopulation of the pigs and all farms that were affected have been disinfected. We completed the exercise by December 23, last year and in two weeks time, we will allow farmers to restock their farms, Mr Kazabu said.

In November last year, Government had conducted an exercise, slaughtering 1,682 pigs that were affected with the fever.

Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Bob Sichinga, last year said the estimates were that 11,000 pigs had been affected with the fever on 14 farms in Lusaka.

In December last year, Government announced it had slaughtered another 6,000 pigs out of the 9,000 infected with Swine Flu from 16 farms, with a population of 33,000 pigs.
