THREE fishermen, one in a critical condition are nursing gunshot wounds after they were allegedly shot at by Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) game scouts for fishing in the game park in Serenje.
And Central Province Commissioner of Police Standwell Lungu has described the situation as volatile following the shooting.
Serenje District Commissioner, Charles Mwelwa and Mr Lungu confirmed separately describing the shooting as unfortunate.
Mr Mwelwa said that the incident happened in Kasanka National Park when five fishermen were found fishing by scout officers who later tied their hands behind their backs.
He said that when some villagers heard that the fishermen had been apprehended, they rushed to the scene to rescue them.
He said one fisherman was shot in the head and that doctors have advised that he cannot be transferred to Kabwe General Hospital until his condition stabilises. The others who were shot in the leg and buttocks are stable.
He said the one shot in the leg has not been found and villagers feared he could be dead but have continued searching for him.
Mr Lungu said police are holding a ZAWA officer to assist with investigations of the incident which happened on Friday morning.
Efforts to get a comment from ZAWA public relations officer proved futile.
