ZAMBIA’S golf prodigy, Madalitso Muthiya on Friday ended his campaign at the Sunshine Tour’s Vodacom Origins in South Africa on five-over par 149 to pick up R4,200 (about K2,436) prize money.
In this event at the Arabella Golf Club in the Western Cape, South African Jean Hugo emerged champion after firing seven-under-par 137, one stroke better than Rhys West, and was courtesy to a birdie on the 18th drenched green of the 18th hole.
According to the Sunshine Tour website, this four-day 72-hole tournament which was reduced to 36 holes after the second round was disrupted by gale-force winds from the Atlantic Ocean.
Muthiya, who is in the Sunshine Tour, also pocketed R4, 200 for his run which was blighted by a poor morning run in the second round which saw him bogey five times on the front-nine.
That five-over on the front nine gave him a displeasing seven-over after a two-over-par 74 from the first round but he recovered well to sink two birdies in the back nine (on the 15th and 18th) to finish on five-over.
There were other players in the tournament who have starred in Zambia like Ulrich van de Berg and Adilson da Silva who both carded five-under-par 139 while 2013 Mopani Copper Mines Zambia Open champion, Wallie Coetzee finished with one-over-par 143.
Another former Zambia Open winner Tyrone Ferreira finished level-par 144 but it was a nightmare for 2014 Zambia Sugar Open winner, Lyle Rowe who carded a woeful 15-over-pat 159 with a poor scorecard of 80 on the first day and 79 on day two.
