Radio Review - jack1RETIRED Catholic Archbishop James Spaita was in the news last week when he counselled politicians to stop bickering, but that they focus on addressing issues like poverty that affect society.
The Archbishop’s other name which was not so much pronounced during his active service is Mwewa, otherwise, he could be referred to as James Mwewa Spaita.
For the purpose of this column, we review the ZNBC’s newscaster for that particular day who mixed-up the three names, at first mention as Archbishop James Mwewa, second mention as Spaita Mwewa, third mention as Bishop Mwewa and lastly as Archbishop Spaita.
With that kind of mixed-up news reading, listeners are left to wonder as to which person is being referred to and it is unprofessional.
PHOENIX
Radio Phoenix runs a 60-minute challenge teaser questions on current affairs, sport, science and general knowledge every morning.
These are 10 questions that ought to be answered in 60 seconds by a listener, correct answers earns  one, K100 cash which has been upgraded from the airtime worth.
This is an interesting innovation for radio, interesting in the sense that it comes in the morning at a time listeners need to awaken their brains.
Apart from the high tempo music which stirs a listener’s mind in the morning, teaser questions are a recipe to ‘breaking the brains’ fast’ from previous night’s slumber.
Very few listeners have previously gotten the answers correct, but they must be praised for firstly facing the tests, and secondly, exposing their knowledge power.

Radio Phoenix was not clear most of last week, at first, it sounded like people were speaking from a hollow space, thereby giving an echo.
***
Luchi, without doubt is the most captivating radio presenter of the moment, together with Roxxy, Christine and Paddy they make listeners want to participate in their morning debates.
Luchi is somewhat free-talking, intelligent and humorous. Some listeners may find him to be ‘naughty’, truth, however, is that age plays an important role in appreciating some programmes.
The younger generation of broadcasters, definitely appeals more to that age group just like the older generation would do to mature broadcasting and discussions.
Based on the above statement, radio stations need to consider presenters that would gratify both the old and younger listeners.
ICENGELO
We have a suggestion for Amapinda ne Nsoselo programme that teaches African riddles and idioms; instead of explaining their meanings, what about posing them without explaining what they mean and let listeners do that.
A live phone-in presentation would be better to allow listeners phone-in and give their answers live on radio.
DEAR JACK
From last week’s column, we highlighted concerns from some listeners who complained of poor ZNBC reception in Ndola.
“Writing to ZNBC’s Radio 1 Kabusha Takolelwe Bowa programme last Sunday, one listener calling from Ndola complained of poor radio reception.
This column monitors Radio from Ndola and can confirm that transmission is not that bad, especially when captured in FM.”
There was a follow up from Ignatius K who wrote from Ndola’s Pamodzi Township that; “Hi Jack, I always enjoy reading your radio review column, I am one ZNBC listener and I can testify for sure that ZNBC is on and off, it sometimes keeps going mash until it completely goes off.”
TIPS
Actors, being accustomed to an emotional style of delivery, often make the best narrators but if none are available, it is worth searching the ranks of lawyers and clergymen.
There are many different kinds of comperes in radio and it does not always follow that the man or woman who is a master in one field is necessarily as good in another.
The personality compere is the host to a light entertainment programme.
He is generally the kind of person who appears to be everybody’s friend. He needs an outgiving quality in his personality and a keen interest in other people.
He is essentially a master-of-ceremonies and should not feel self-conscious on a public platform.
The sports commentator needs to have a keen interest in and a good knowledge of the particular sport he comp6res. Quick eyes and a ready ability to describe what he sees are essential to his make-up. He needs to express excitement in his voice without raising it to fever pitch.
The adjudicator-comp6re is the linchpin of the discussion programme or panel game. He introduces the subject and speakers, keeps the discussion moving and summarises the points of view expressed. He needs to have a quick mind and a ready ability to assemble facts.
