A LUSAKA-based police officer has shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself at Kamanga Police Post in full view of colleagues and members of the public.
The officer shot himself with an AK 47 assault rifle in broad daylight leaving police officers and other onlookers shocked by the act.
Samuel Bwalya, aged 40, killed himself after shooting his 29-year-old wife, Dee Chileshe, a few metres away from the police post where he was operating from.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda confirmed the incident in a statement in Lusaka yesterday and said the cause of the officer’s actions was not yet established.
Ms Chanda said Bwalya had called his wife on her cellular phone to go to the police post around 12:00 hours and as she was approaching the police post, he fired at her, killing her instantly.
Meanwhile, two people have died on the spot while five others sustained injuries after the Toyota Regius vehicle they were in overturned due to speeding.
Ms Chanda said the dead have been identified as Alex Mabila and Wilbroad Mulenga aged 45 and 35 respectively.
She said the driver of the vehicle, registration number AIB 150, was among the injured in an accident which occurred along the Luwingu- Kasama road on Wednesday around 18:00 hours.
She said the injured were admitted to Kasama General Hospital.
In Kabwe Police apprehended 16 people for trading in suspected pirated DVDs.
Central Province Commissioner of Police Standwell Lungu warned that anyone found trading in pirated DVDs would be arrested.
“I can confirm that we have picked up 16 people and confiscated several suspected pirated DVDs and CDs following an operation in the town centre. As Police we are committed to fighting crime and ensuring that property rights are protected,” he said.
