POLICE in Kabwe have arrested a cleaner at Kabwe Municipal Council (KMC) for allegedly withdrawing more than K30,000 from the council’s account using different forged signatures.
An assistant accountant has also been arrested for allegedly issuing a cheque as payment of terminal benefits using her husband’s name.
Central province commissioner of police Standwell Lungu, who confirmed the development yesterday said police arrested Gilbert Kunda, 23, following investigations and that after a search at his house, police recovered K10,300 cash while K10,500 was found in his bank account.
Mr Lungu said when Kunda was being picked up, another K1,040 was found in his pocket bringing the total amount recovered from him to K21,840 and that the total amount withdrawed was K38,000.
He is allegedly to have forged signatures for the town clerk and director finance.
He explained that police investigations revealed that the money was withdrawn on different periods between June and July this year and that three different national registration cards belonging to other people were also recovered from him.
He added that he was also found with five bank withdrawal leafs from ZANACO and three from Indo Bank. He has been charged with theft by public servant and forgery, among other charges.
In the other case, M Lungu said police arrested the assistant accountant identified as Misozi Chileshe for issuing a cheque for th payment of K6,000, in the name o Bessy Changwe, who is her husband.
Police also seized her husband’s account with a K4,000 balance.
