By SANDRA MWILA –
SPORTS Minister Chishimba Kambwili has said he is psychologically prepared for the disappointment that awaits Zambia from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth athletes in Scotland.
Kambwili said he would have loved to see Zambian athletes bringing back medals but that it would only be possible through God’s grace because of inadequate preparations.
“I will not be disappointed if they come without medals because I am psychologically prepared. I don’t know about the rest of the country,” Kambwili said.
He said Zambia would only start reaping medals at such high level tournaments when a new national sports policy was implemented.
“At a sports event of such magnitude, it will be by God’s grace if the athletes will reap any medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games,” he said.
He said he was not happy with the way local sport was being organised until a new sports policy was launched.
Kambwili said the current trend of athletes starting preparing three months before a tournament was contributing to poor performances.
“When I went to Cuba last year, I found them preparing for the 2024 Olympics with 13 year olds but in Zambia we want to prepare in three months,” he said.
Kambwili directed Sports Council of Zambia chairperson, Mwamba Kalenga to work with the Director of Sports, Bessy Chelemu to quicken the process of preparing for a new sports policy.
