FIVE suspects detained in Nchelenge Police cells escaped on Tuesday evening using a back window of the cell.
The five, that were arrested for various offences, removed the burglar bars of the window and escaped unnoticed by Police.
Luapula Province Police chief Malcolm Mulenga said yesterday that there were 12 people in the cell on Tuesday evening and five of them escaped.
“The escape is believed to have happened between 19:30 and 23:00 hours. The incidence was noticed during the change of shifts at 23:45 hours,” Mr Mulenga said.
The five that escaped were Paul Mulenga, Bernard Chama, both of Shishibeti Village and facing charges of house-breaking and theft.
The others were Bernard Kalumba of Shinjoni Village, facing a charge of malicious damage to property and Michael Mwila of Chandwe Village facing a charge of using insulting language.
The fifth was James Kunda of Kilwa Island and facing a charge of assault. All five live in Chief Kambwali’s area in Nchelenge District.
Mr Mulenga said Police have launched a manhunt for the escapees.
