HEALTH Deputy Minister Chitalu Chilufya has said the opening of Chama District Hospital will be a relief on Chama Zonal Health Centre, which currently caters for a catchment area of 135,000 people and records about 100 births monthly.
Dr Chilufya said the labour ward at the Chama Zonal Health Centre was too small hence the urgent need to complete construction of phase III of Chama District Hospital.
The deputy minister said the completion of the Chama District Hospital would therefore serve as the best Golden Jubilee gift for the people in the area.
“Before Independence Day, Chama District Hospital must be opened to the public. So everybody must up their game and ensure that we expedite the construction. The opening of Chama District Hospital will be a Golden Jubilee gift to the people of Chama,” he said.
Dr Chilufya projected that the construction of the Chama District Hospital in Muchinga Province should be completed by October, this year.
Phase III of the project includes, among others, construction of 10 staff houses by Pro-Fab Zambia Limited.
Dr Chilufya commended Chama Zonal Health Centre district community medical officer Anthony Kamanzi and his staff for their dedication to duty, which had led to the introduction of a maternity annex and theatre.
Dr Kamanzi said the introduction of the maternity annex and theatre had led to a drastic reduction in maternal mortality rates from eight in a month and 30 in a year to less than eight in a year.
Dr Kamanzi said unlike other health facilities, Chama Zonal Health Centre was well stocked with drugs.
