A WRANGLE has erupted in the National Union of Transport and Allied Workers (NUTAW) over the administration affairs of the union, following the death of its general secretary, Nicky Hatimbula a few months ago.
NUTAW’s two deputy secretary generals, Paul Sunkutu for finance and his administration counterpart, Jacob Silozi are now up in arms against
each other over administration affairs of the union.
The two differed after Mr Silozi recently issued a circular to call for the convening of a prompt congress meeting scheduled for next week on Friday in Lusaka, a matter that incensed Mr Sunkutu who has since accused the former of hijacking the union.
Mr Sunkutu said in an interview yesterday that the circular for holding of the congress going round and signed by Mr Silozi was misplaced.
“We have disputed this National Congress because he (Silozi) is doing this alone without consulting other people in the executive.
“We know his ill motives for organising this congress to put himself in the position of general secretary because he has been campaigning from the first day when our late general secretary Nicky Hatimbula died,” he said.
Mr Sunkutu accused Mr Silozi of having appointed himself acting general secretary of the union without the approval of the general membership.
“He is acting as general secretary of the union without anyone having appointed him and he is drawing allowances illegally,” Mr Sunkutu
said.
He wondered why Mr Silozi should call for a congress without due preparations regarding the list of delegates as well as required reports both for administration and finance.
Mr Sunkutu advised the union’s general membership to ignore the circular for the congress because Mr Silozi had allegedly not followed procedure.
Effort to get Mr Silozi for a comment on the matter proved futile by press time as his mobile phone went unanswered.
