GOVERNMENT does not have immediate plans to revive the Njanji commuter Train until it modernises the entire rail system, Transport Deputy Minister Panji Kaunda has said.
Colonel Kaunda said Government wants to modernise the system with other forms of coaches such as electric trains.
In an interview, Col. Kaunda said Government envisaged the creation of local in-town railway routes with modern coaches as the main means of transport.
He said Government was already looking at tender procedures ahead of feasibility studies for the project and that cooperating partners would supply models for the implementation of such facilities.
“At the moment, we are not looking at reviving the Njanji Commuter because there are plans to establish a modern railway system with new trains as a means of transport.
Meanwhile, Colonel Kaunda has said construction of the railway line between Kalumbila in Solwezi and Jimbe in Angola is expected to commence this year at a cost of US$1 billion.
Col. Kaunda said works on the project were expected to be completed within the course of 2014.
