TWO babies from the same family aged one and three have drowned in a well in Kitwe’s Chipata Township. And in Ndola, a student at the Northern Technical College (NORTEC) has committed suicide after he lost school fees amounting to K4,000.

Joyce Kafula Mushota aged one-year-eight months and Mwila Salanga, three, both of 08/8 Chipata Township, fell into the well at their home, while playing.  Copperbelt Police Chief Joyce Kasosa confirmed the incident that happened on Tuesday at around 15:00 hours.

“The babies were left alone at the house by their parents who went out to visit within the neighbourhood,” she said.

She said members of the public reported the case to the police who went to the scene and retrieved the two bodies.

Ms Kasosa said the bodies of the two were laying in Kitwe Central hospital mortuary waiting for a postmortem.

In the Nortec incident, Denis Chileya, 26, a second year student in mechanical drafting was on Tuesday afternoon found dead in the college football pitch near Kwacha Road. A bottle of doom pesticide was found at the scene.

Some students at the institution said their colleague committed suicide after discovering that his money meant for college fees had been stolen.

Ms Kasosa and college principal Victor Mulenga confirmed the death of the student in separate interviews yesterday. It is believed that the student drunk doom pesticide after losing school fees amounting to K4,000.

“The student is believed to have taken the pesticide after he failed to account for his tuition fees. We do not know whether the money was stolen or he misappropriated it,” she said.

Ms Kasosa said the body was taken to Ndola Central Hospital mortuary where is awaiting a postmortem. Mr Mulenga said Mr Chileya was a second year student in mechanical drafting and that he was from Chambishi. Meanwhile, 12 vehicles were reduced to shells after the garage they were parked in caught fire in Kitwe.

Ms Kasosa confirmed the incident that happened yesterday at around 02:30 hours at Jose Muku Garage.
