SHABONGO-
THE Lusaka City Council (LCC), in conjunction with various stakeholders, has embarked on a Garden City Project to create a green environment in line with the original Green City Concept of the local authority.
LCC Town Clerk, Alex Mwansa said the project is expected to culminate into the Golden Jubilee celebrations to mark Zambia’s 50 years of Independence on October 24.
Mr Mwansa said the local authority has undertaken various activities in line with the ‘Garden City Concept’ which is meant to address issues of mobility, road safety and to create a green environment.
He said in a statement released by LCC assistant public relations manager, Brenda Katongola that the council has sunk four boreholes, two at the Civic Centre, one at Kabulonga roundabout and another at the junction of Nyerere road.
The other one has been sunk at Los Angeles Boulevard, inclusive of equipment at a total cost of K184, 000 to avert water billing costs.
Mr Mwansa said the Council is also doing landscaping and constructing walkways along Los Angeles Boulevard and President’s lane which is expected to be spread to all parts of the city to improve road safety for pedestrians and to beautify the city.
“Currently, we are working in conjunction with Ministry of Works, Supply, Communication, Supply and Transport under the building department, in planning and implementing works to improve the status of the Freedom Statue and surrounding green spaces.
“As Zambia turns 50 years, we have started a Green City Concept so that we revert our city to its original status as the Garden City. We are therefore, encouraging members of the community to keep their environment clean and green,” Mr Mwansa said.
