A DAY-OLD baby was on Friday rescued from a pit latrine in Ndola’s Kaloko area after it was dumped by its mother upon delivery.
Alert neighbours, who heard the baby cry from the latrine rushed to the scene and managed to retrieve it and rushed to Arthur Davison Children Hospital for treatment.
Copperbelt Police chief Joyce Kasosa confirmed the incident in Ndola yesterday and that the baby whose mother has been identified as Dorothy Kumwenda, 24, was alive.
Ms Kasosa said Kumwenda had since been apprehended for attempted murder and investigations had since been launched.
And Ms Kasosa said the province recorded three fatal accidents in Chingola, Kalulushi and Mufulira districts respectively.
She said the first accident occurred around 23:00 hours yesterday when a pedestrian was hit and died on the spot by unknown vehicle in Kalulushi’s Kalengwa area.
She said the Police could not record the details of the vehicle involved because the driver did not stop and was on the run.
In another accident which happened in Mufulira near Sabina area, a Toyota Chaser registration number ACX 4367 ran over Bright Mwewa aged 10 who died on the spot.
The other accident was a head-on collision between a Toyota Spacio registration number ALP 9947 and a Toyota Scepter registration number ABT 4505 along the Kitwe/ Chingola Road.
The driver of Spacio George Ngoma aged 66, sustained injuries and was receiving treatment at Nchanga North Hospital in Chingola together with the driver of the Toyota identified as Brian Nzenze.
Ms Kasosa said one of the passengers from the Toyota identified as Derrick Mwila Chansa, who sustained critical injuries, died on the spot but the other passenger Mukuka Mubanga was being treated at the Nchanga North Hospital.
