Avoid careless talk

Dear Editor,
I would like to echo the sentiments by former Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) executive director,  Bishop Paul Mususu that careless talk can generate chaos as reported in the media.
It’s only on Monday April 7, 2014 when Rwanda held solemn commemorations to mark the 20th anniversary of the genocide.
In 100 days, from April to July 1994, at least 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus were slaughtered when a Hutu extremist-led government launched a plan to murder the country’s entire Tutsi minority and many others who opposed the government’s policies.
Prior to the beginning of the genocide, Hutu extremists disseminated messages through the media telling their fellow Hutus that the Tutsis were planning a killing campaign against them.
Radio RTLM, a private Hutu-owned radio station, relentlessly condemned Tutsis and their supporters, characterising them as sub-human and calling them cockroaches.
From this we can see that careless talk costs lives. The spread of falsehood can lead a country into turmoil.
No one can claim that this country does not have serious problems. Just like any other country in the world, we do have issues, but that does not give anyone the right to go around and try to make false alarms and paint everything black.
We shouldn’t for a second think that the peace we’ve enjoyed since Independence was delivered on a silver platter.
Our forefathers paid the ultimate price for this peace some of us seem to take for granted.
We need to learn from what happened to Rwanda. While the people of that country were killing each other for 100 days, the whole world looked away.
And to anyone who maybe thinking that the Rwandan genocide happened 20 years ago and things have changed since then, I would suggest they take a look at how the international community has ignored the human tragedy in Syria.
We only have One Zambia. Let us guard the peace we enjoy with our lives. One Zambia , One Nation.
