ZAMBIA is seeking an extradition of a 28-year-old Indian national from Mumbai who flew out last year after stealing K40 million from Kabdi Supermarket in Central Province.
The Zambia Police have asked the International Police (Interpol) to help arrest Arshad Abduli Hamilld Khanche who is currently believed to be in Mumbai, India.
Both Interpol and Zambia Police assistant spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed during the week that a red notice had been issued for the arrest of Mr Khanche.
According to Interpol who have since placed Mr Khanche’s portrait on its website, the Indian national is being sought for prosecution and possible sentencing by judicial authorities in Zambia.
Mr Hamoonga said in a separate interview that the suspect is believed to have stolen K40 million from Kabdi Supermarket in Kapiri Mposhi.
“It is true that this man disappeared late last year after allegedly stealing the money and police are still looking for him,” he said.
“He was employed by Kabdi in Kapiri Mposhi and was assigned to deposit the money in the bank on behalf of the company, but he instead disappeared using the Ndola International Airport aboard a Kenyan Airways.”
He said the police had engaged the Interpol in order to find ways of ensuring that Mr Khanche faced the law.
Mr Khanche is the fourth person wanted by the Zambia Police whose suspected criminal activities have attracted the intervention of Interpol in recent times.
The France-based Interpol issued a red notice for a notorious Zambian criminal Tony Mulenga, 43, after eluding a local police dragnet for about three years.
Mulenga is said to have made his name for motor vehicle thefts as well as robberies in Zambia, but police efforts to bring him to book have yielded nothing.
