GOVERNMENT has embarked on an audit to determine the number of expatriates currently working in Zambia and to establish if there are foreigners who are doing jobs that can be done by locals.
Labour and Social Security Minister Fackson Shamenda said the exercise to review expatriate labour in the country was progressing well.
Mr Shamenda said it was Government’s resolve to address concerns over ‘unwanted’ expatriate labour in the country.
The minister said in an interview yesterday that concerns of some expatriates operating in the country without work permits had also been a thorny issue for some time now.
He said in response to the concerns, that Government through the Zambianisation Committee conducted a labour audit aimed at establishing the number of expatriates in the country.
“We want to know how many expatriates we have in the country and determine if the work they are doing cannot be done by qualified Zambians,” he said.
Mr Shamenda said the audit for expatriate labour would be an on-going programme to ensure continued scrutiny of the industry.
The minister said Government remained committed to fulfilling its promise of ensuring that Zambians benefit from the country’s wealth by providing them with opportunities such as those for jobs that they were qualified to do.
