THE Prisons Service has cultivated more than 400 hectares of land in Eastern Province.
Provincial Prisons Deputy Commandant Moses Tembo told High Court Judge Mungeni Mulenga during the official opening of the criminal sessions in Chipata that the prisons in the area had cultivated 440 hectares of land.
He said the prisons would soon start harvesting the farm produce from the 440 hectares of land.
“In terms of food, we are okay in the province and we shall soon start up the harvesting in our 440 hectares of land. Again, in terms of health of our prisoners is okay,” he said.
Mr Tembo, however, lamented that prisons in the province were congested with Chipata prison holding 806 inmates, Petauke prison had 301, Lundazi prison 250, Nyimba prison 202 and Katete prison had 196 respectively.
Ms Justice Mulenga is expected to visit one of the prisons.
