ATTORNEY-GENERAL Mumba Malila has urged University of Zambia (UNZA) Law students to adhere to the rule of Law by being transparent in their profession.
Mr Malila said lawyers played a vital role in creating and upholding a moral, equitable and just society.
He was speaking yesterday when he opened a five-day training on legal writing and analysis held at UNZA and organised by DLA Piper, a global law firm spearheading pro bono activities Worldwide.
The attorney general said lawyers made meaningful contributions to the economic and social advancement of Zambia, Africa and the rest of the World as well as providing World class services in higher education and knowledge generation.
“I urge you to rise to this challenge and use the power that your legal training affords you, to make a positive difference in your communities and for society as a whole, this training presents a wonderful opportunity to the students to learn practical writing skills,” he said.
Mr Malila said the writing skills to be imparted into the students, was coming from experienced advocates who employed the skills routinely in their daily work in the provision of services and advancement in their respective fields of expertise.
In a speech read for him by his chief draft person in the Ministry of Justice Andrew Nkunika, Mr Malila said he was confident that the training would expose them to world scenarios which they were likely to encounter in their future professional capacities.
UNZA acting Dean Frederick Musonda said the training would add value to the students who were preparing to go in the field, as the training had been specifically designed to complement the law schools existing course materials.
DLA Piper assistant director Sara Andrews said the programme would provide invaluable opportunities for law students to gain practical, real world expertise from international experts.
“We are thrilled to return for a second year to teach legal drafting at UNZA school of law, as practitioners we attach great significance to this training initiative and thank UNZA management for spearheading these trainings,” she said.
