ANGLO-American Corporation is eyeing Chavuma District in North-Western Province for mining exploration.
Chavuma District Commissioner Lawrence Kayumba said Anglo-America was seriously considering investing in mining activities in the area and that so far, the company had commenced exploration for minerals.
Mr Kayumba said in an interview that a team from Anglo American Corporation had setup base in the district for mineral exploration.
He said the company, which had hired Boart-Long Exploration for the project, was looking for assorted minerals but mainly copper.
“They came to the district around April last year and were around until somewhere in September when they demobilised because of heavy rains,” he said.
Mr Kayumba said the company had come with a range of heavy equipment for the mineral exploration, which was being conducted in Kalombo area.
He said the team was in the meantime in South Africa where they went after demobilising but was expected in the country any time soon.
Mr Kayumba said the company was estimating to take two to seven years as the period for the exploration exercise.
“Already, the company has pledged to distribute mosquito nets to the community of Kalombo as well as books to schools in the area as part of their corporate social responsibility,” Mr Kayumba said.
